The Arts in Galena

Colleen Howland

My interest in baskets began many years ago. I love all styles. I have a great respect for the history of basket making, the ingenuity used in natural color and style. While living in Iowa, I learned the basics of basket weaving from a friend and found that I loved it. That was in the early '90's and I've been weaving ever since.

My husband, David, and I moved to Galena in 1998. Since moving here, I've had more time to expand my weaving interests. I attend Sievers School of Fiber Arts on Washington Island in Wisconsin each year, as well as a basket camp in Oregon, IL to learn new techniques and style. I take as many classes as I can find time to expand my weaving knowledge. I work mainly with flat and round reed. I particularly enjoy experimenting with color and I love doing twills, adding beads, fabric and yarn. My most recent interest has been in pine needle basketry, where I still have much to learn.

I enjoy teaching basketry and I learn so much from my students. I teach at Hello Galena, at the Galena Territory Owners Club and in my home studio. My baskets are for sale at Gustafson and Grey, Ltd as well as the Hello Galena Emporium, both in Galena or by contacting me personally.

I have shown my work at Art Fairs in Galena IL, Edina, MN, and most recently in Barrington and Crystal Lake, IL.

I feel blessed for what my friend shared with me and I enjoy passing that gift on to others.
